Tinnitus (Ringing in the Ears)is a symptom of a pre-existing condition, rather than a disease in itself. Because the exact causes of its occurrence are not known, several theories have been proposed to explain how it manifests and why, without reaching a universally valid conclusion.
Tinnitus – possible causes and risk factors
- Exposure to loud noises in an unprotected environment such as hearing protection, exposure to loud music or constant use of headphones;
- Hearing loss (whether unilateral or bilateral). The aging process can cause damage to the inner ear, causing unpleasant sounds that are not even there.
- Chronic consumption of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, diuretics.
- Dental neuralgia; asthma; smoking; chronic insomnia; osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis; glaucoma; diabetes; depression, anxiety; various thyroid disorders; cardiovascular diseases; hypertension; ear infections; the presence of foreign bodies in the ears; allergies; anemia and others.
It should be noted that an ear canal infection, head injuries or some surgery near the ear can cause temporary tinnitus. It is important to talk to an audiologist about potential diseases that can cause tinnitus.
Tinnitus or tinnitus – how can we protect ourselves?
In order to protect ourselves against the appearance of tinnitus, we must live a balanced life, with a good diet, sports when possible and without abuse of alcohol, tobacco or other harmful substances in the long term.
Avoid stress as much as possible
Insomnia and anxiety can be combated through counseling-based approaches, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, mindfulness-based therapy, and sound and music therapy.
If necessary, consider using a hearing aid
By amplifying the background sound, the hearing aids make the tinnitus less noticeable. It can also reduce the stress that arises when you try to hear and understand what is being discussed while tiring coughing continues to bother you.
Opt for a balanced diet
A healthy diet rich in protein and vitamins based on fish, green vegetables, nuts, seeds, fruits is recommended.
